I teach rock, pop & blues on acoustic or electric guitar including lead improvisation, each to an intermediate level. See the subject areas here.
You don't have to study music theory or practice scales over and over to play the Guitar, some famous people who play have never studied theory. Although learning scales is important and can very much help or improve your ability, by learning some simple 'patterns' you will learn an ability to start Jamming in only a matter of hours, these simple patterns lead to techniques to be able to play by ear or 'feel'.
By its nature, playing the Guitar is largely a subjective effort. The shear technical prowess of someone like John Williams is in stark contrast to emotive effort of Jimi Hendrix, Jimi Page or Eric Clapton. The instrument can defy logic, after a serious injury in a fire, Django Reinhardt become a very proficient Gypsy Jazz player using only two fingers on his left hand! Examples of these people playing are available on the internet for us all to enjoy or learn from.
With the advent of the World Wide Web many things have become easier, obtaining song lyrics or chords is one such example. Generally, knowledge sharing is in my opinion one of the webs greatest achievements. Accessing relative information for your chosen subject has never been easier. There are some who dispute the authenticity of this freely available knowledge, arguments rage about the consequences of propagating inaccurate information but when it comes to learning practical skills such as playing the guitar the internet becomes a rich source of tools, tips and inspiration.
